GI 201: An insurer’s financial health has several dimensions
Profitability, reserve adequacy, capital and liquidity provide different views of financial health. A strong result on one dimension does not settle the others.
Original practice scenario
An original insurer reports underwriting profit but faces large near-term claim payments and illiquid assets. Identify which ratios or cash-flow exhibits would inform the liquidity decision. Explain why an annual profit measure alone does not show that cash will be available on the needed dates.
Study check
Write the assumptions, the decision being supported and one limitation. Use the current course syllabus for the required terminology and scope; this introductory guide is not a complete course summary.
